The Big Game: Preparing for the Super Bowl
Whether you're a diehard fan, a casual fan, a fan only because your boyfriend is, or really not a fan at all, football (American football to the rest of the world), is a game of skill, strategy, brute force, stamina, agility, and money.
Every year in the Autumn, the AFC (American Football Conference), and the NFC (National Football Conference), pit their teams against one another until only one group of champions stand. At this point the AFC champions and the NFC champions meet each other on the gridiron (what football geeks call the football field), in a contest to see which team is the best of all teams.
This contest is called…The Superbowl. Why is it called the Superbowl when it has nothing to do with bowling? Well, it probably has something to do with the bowl shape of the stadiums they play in. Who really knows? The important thing is that these two teams meet face to face, head to head, body to body, to prove which team is the champion of all.
The Superbowl is the most watched sporting event in the US, with millions of Americans (at home and abroad) tuning in to see which team wins—even if their team isn't included.
Attending the Superbowl in person requires some preparation, but if you really want to experience the highs and lows of football, the Superbowl is the place to do it.
Bleeding Money
First things first. Before you can even think about attending the Superbowl you need to empty your savings account and buy a ticket. Once you get your tickets in hand, put them in an envelope, laminate it, clip it to a badge reel, and hang that from a badge holder around your neck. Never let them out of your sight. Not only do the tickets cost hundreds of dollars, but if you plan to stay the night in the host city, you can expect the local hotels (up to 50 miles away from the venue) to charge inflated prices. In all honesty, you will probably spend over $2,000 on tickets and boarding alone. Then there comes the point in time when you need to get to the game.
Getting to the Game
With your badge reel and badge holder securely in place around your neck, you need to load up your car with the Superbowl essentials (grill, food for the tailgating party, beer, sunscreen, stadium seat cushions (those seats are usually uncomfortable), comfortable clothes (preferably all emblazoned with the name of your favored team), and a camera.
Buying Memorabilia
During Halftime or any one of the many timeouts, you can visit the gift center and memorabilia shop and purchase enough Superbowl stuff to fill a suitcase. There are: giant foam fingers, hats (ball and knit), sweaters, t-shirts, scarves (especially if the game is hosted in a colder location), socks, gloves, mugs, lanyards, badge reels, and badge holders (you can use it to hold next year's Superbowl tickets).
The Superbowl only comes around once a year, but when it does come, it is an experience that will leave you broke but happy.
