Pioneer Courthouse Square
History
The Portland Hotel around 1900 in the place of the public square now
Flag of Portland, Oregon, fly in the Plaza
The square is named Pioneer Courthouse, 1875, a federal building that occupies the block directly east of the square.
The square itself in 1856, when the city bought land which includes the site as the site of Central School. The school moved in 1883 when plans were made for a great hotel in site in response to the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad. After delays due to a recession, the eight-story Portland hotel on the site was completed in 1890.
The hotel was the center of social activity in the city during the first half of the 20 th century. In 1951, the hotel was demolished and a two-storey car park was built. Arc gatework original hotel and were made aware of the design of the square and are now on the south side of the square.
In the 1970's, a downtown comprehensive plan proposed that the site is dedicated to the public space. In 1975, then-Portland Mayor Neil Goldschmidt began negotiating with local department store Meier & Frank property for the city and finally convinced the store to sell the land to the town after concerns were alleviated parking. In early 1980, a design competition was announced, to submit proposals for what would become Pioneer Courthouse Square. A total of 162 submissions, five finalists emerged from companies based in New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco / Los Angeles, Boston and Portland. Portland's team, a group of architects mob of funds, writers and an artist ", led by chief designer Willard Martin, competed against a group composed of Frank Ivancie and Bill Roberts, who wanted to charge admission an atrium filled with blocks on the site. Martin Willard group design literally painted on the parking lot occupies the block, and his plan was accepted. Its design was an "Architectural Design Mention" in Progressive Architecture magazine in 1981. [Citation needed]
Funding problems arose after the design was completed. Portland Mayor Frank Ivancie led some business owners in the city and other influential citizens in opposition to the concept of an open process (Instead of attached) public square, based on concerns that an open design to attract passers in the area. Former Gov. Tom McCall, who was then was a television commentator, was outraged:
It would be a shock ... many residents of Oregon to learn that a power of a few agents have stated that the result a design competition at the national level does not make sense ... [Citation needed]
Construction of the square requires $ 3 million for land acquisition and $ 4.3 million for structures and facilities, an amount large enough for the opposition almost doomed the project. Martin, along with other architects and volunteers, called attention to the delays of the opposition to paint a stylized model of the proposal on the same site. But it took the formation of "Friends of Pioneer Square "A group of citizens headed by the city commissioners and Mike Jordan, Charles Lindberg, and $ 750,000 from the sale of 50,000 bricks with inscriptions to rescue the project.
The Plaza opened on April 6, 1984, with an opening party that drew more than 10,000 people.
In 2001, the realization of Fox Tower, a skyscraper on the block immediately southwest of the plaza, caused controversy among citizens on the fact that the sunlight that blocks most of the square during the afternoon and evening.
An Overview of Pioneer Courthouse Square from 05/04/2007.
In 2002, the organization had control of the plaza plans add an ice rink large for four months, at a cost of $ 12 million. Pioneer Square Group and Project for Public Spaces I thought the track would be the most active place in the winter months, and had the funds pledged by The Oregonian and Wells Fargo Bank. There was a strong negative reaction, as admission would be charged, violating the spirit of freedom of expression in the square and its design. Block 5 Park is being designed, many felt that ice rink should be placed there instead.
Features and Application
On the streets of Morrison and Yamhill (northern and southern borders of the square) are protected MAX Light Rail stops. On the north side is an artistic function, which is gradually imposing classical columns fall as an ancient ruin. There are tables Outdoor chess in some of the columns overthrown chess players often congregate there during the day. A waterfall on the west side of the square frames the entrance of a public information center. The center of the plaza is organized as an amphitheater, with a semicircle of about two dozen steps serving as seats when the square is used for concerts or other events. Pioneer Courthouse Square was designated non-smoking area with effect from January 1, 2007.
The bricks for paving of the square were sold to raise funds for the construction of the plaza, and are inscribed with the names of donors. Eric Ladd, one of the first "live pioneer ofsustainable ", built the gateway of wrought iron on the eastern edge of the Plaza of the 1970's, waste recovered from the Hotel Portland.
In March 2009, Portland's NBC affiliate, KGW, opened a studio high definition news in the plaza, which used to broadcast its morning, noon and 7 newscasts afternoon. Light bulbs on the side of the machine are reminiscent of a mercury thermometer and light up progressively as the temperature increases.

Reception
In 2006, the architect Laurie Olin described Pioneer Courthouse Square saying "you really can not sit in the shade in Pioneer Square. It is not quiet. The source is seen as a postmodern pit. It is intended as a park for the entire city. Need large spaces empty. If empty, then [Director of the Park] must be complete. "
